The course of evolution within the family Mononchidae is deduced from morphology and ontogeny as far as this is known. The division of the Mononchidae into two groups on the basis of the nature of the oesophago-intestinal junction and the shape of the base of the sclerotized stoma is considered to be an early, but strictly Mononchid development.
