Neonatal intensive care unit survivors are at substantial risk for a range of neurodevelopmental sequelae, and therefore a variety of clinical diagnostic techniques have been evaluated as predictors of outcome. We summarize the prognostic value of evoked potentials in newborns at risk. A review of the literature reveals that brainstem conduction abnormalities in auditory brainstem evoked potentials are associated with neuromotor impairment; however, there are many false negative studies.
