The limy Calcare Massiccio Formation outcrops in wide areas in southern Liguria, Toscana, Umbria, Marche, northern Lazio, and Abruzzi. This formation, up to 400 meters thick, overlies a thin-bedded unit (Avicula contorta beds) that consists of micritic limestones and marls with isolated, very thin levels of gypsum.
