}SUMMARY A study carried out on a sheep farm examined whether Toxoplasma gondii foetal infection and associated abortion occur in successive lambings. We identified 29 ewes that gave birth to lambs on at least 2 successive years over our study period, 2000–2003. Tissue samples from the progeny of these ewes were analysed by PCR to determine infection status with T. gondii. T. gondii-infected lambs were born in 31% of successive pregnancies. T. gondii-positive lambs were aborted in successive…

oxoplasma gondii abortion storm in sheep on a Texas farm and solation of mouse virulent atypical genotype T . gondii from an aborted amb from a chronically infected ewe

The hypothesis that most sheep that have aborted due to T. gondii develop protection against future toxoplasmosis induced abortion, but the protection is not absolute is supported.

One of the principle dogmas of T. gondii research may need revising, namely that sequential abortion and infection does not occur due to acquired immunity, is shown.

Increased Toxoplasma gondii positivity relative to age in 125 Scottish sheep flocks; evidence of frequent acquired infection
- Biology, MedicineVeterinary research
- 2011
Overall T. gondii seroprevalence, at individual sheep level, was determined to be 56.6%; each flock tested, had at least a single positive animal and in four flocks all ewes tested positive, showing that acquired infections during the life of the animals is frequent and that environmental contamination by T. Gondii must be significant.

Ewes infected prior to mating develop immune responses that help protect against disease in a subsequent pregnancy and also against experimental challenge administered during pregnancy, and Toxovax® is the only commercially available vaccine worldwide to protect against congenital toxoplasmosis.
