We estimate the mass of the Milky Way (MW) within 21.1 kpc using the kinematics of halo globular clusters (GCs) determined by Gaia. The second Gaia data release (DR2) contained a catalog of absolute proper motions (PMs) for a set of Galactic GCs and satellite galaxies. We select from the catalog only halo GCs, identifying a total of 34 GCs spanning , and use their 3D kinematics to estimate the anisotropy over this range to be , in good agreement with, though slightly lower than, a recent…

The milky way total mass profile as inferred from Gaia DR2

We determine the Milky Way (MW) mass profile inferred from fitting physically motivated models to the Gaia DR2 Galactic rotation curve and other data. Using various hydrodynamical simulations of

The Cumulative Mass Profile of the Milky Way as Determined by Globular Cluster Kinematics from Gaia DR2

We present new mass estimates and cumulative mass profiles (CMPs) with Bayesian credible regions for the Milky Way (MW) Galaxy, given the kinematic data of globular clusters (GCs) as provided by (1)

Kinematic Structure of the Large Magellanic Cloud Globular Cluster System from Gaia eDR3 and Hubble Space Telescope Proper Motions

We have determined bulk proper motions (PMs) for 31 LMC GCs from Gaia eDR3 and Hubble Space Telescope data using multiple independent analysis techniques. Combined with literature values for

The mass of the Milky Way out to 100 kpc using halo stars

We use a distribution function analysis to estimate the mass of the Milky Way out to 100 kpc using a large sample of halo stars. These stars are compiled from the literature, and the majority (~95%)

Mass and shape of the Milky Way’s dark matter halo with globular clusters from Gaia and Hubble

Aims. We estimate the mass of the inner (< 20 kpc) Milky Way and the axis ratio of its inner dark matter halo using globular clusters as tracers. At the same time, we constrain the distribution in

The velocity anisotropy of the Milky Way satellite system

We analyse the orbital kinematics of the Milky Way (MW) satellite system utilizing the latest systemic proper motions for 38 satellites based on data from Gaia Data Release 2. Combining these data

The twisted dark matter halo of the Milky Way

We analyse systems analogous to the Milky Way (MW) in the eagle cosmological hydrodynamics simulation in order to deduce the likely structure of the MW’s dark matter (DM) halo. We identify MW mass

We report results on the kinematics of Milky Way (MW) globular clusters (GCs) based on updated space velocities for nearly the entire GC population. We found that a 3D space with the semimajor axis,

Milky Way globular cluster dynamics: are they preferentially co-rotating?

The motion of baryonic components of the Milky Way is governed by both luminous and dark matter content of the Galaxy. Thus, the dynamics of Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) can be used as tracers

What to expect when using globular clusters as tracers of the total mass distribution in Milky Way-mass galaxies

Dynamical models allow us to connect the motion of a set of tracers to the underlying gravitational potential, and thus to the total (luminous and dark) matter distribution. They are particularly

The Mass of the Milky Way: Limits from a newly assembled set of halo objects

We set new limits on the mass of the Milky Way, making use of the latest kinematic information for Galactic satellites and halo objects. Our sample consists of 11 satellite galaxies, 137 globular

The present and future mass of the Milky Way halo

A simple model for the Milky Way halo is presented. It has a flat rotation curve in the inner regions, but the density falls off sharply beyond an outer edge. This truncated, flat rotation curve (TF)

We use Gaia Data Release 2 to determine the mean proper motions for 150 Milky Way globular clusters (almost the entire known population), with a typical uncertainty of 0.05 mas/yr limited mainly by

KINEMATICS OF THE STELLAR HALO AND THE MASS DISTRIBUTION OF THE MILKY WAY USING BLUE HORIZONTAL BRANCH STARS

Here, we present a kinematic study of the Galactic halo out to a radius of ∼60 kpc, using 4664 blue horizontal branch stars selected from the SDSS/SEGUE survey to determine key dynamical properties.
