The real‐time earthquake information system (REIS) of the Japanese seismic network is developed for automatically determining earthquake parameters within a few seconds after the P‐waves arrive at the closest stations using both the P‐wave arrival times and the timing data that P‐waves have not yet arrived at other stations. REIS results play a fundamental role in the real‐time information for earthquake early warning in Japan. We show the rapidity and accuracy of REIS from the analysis of 4…

The Status of Earthquake Early Warning around the World: An Introductory Overview

The term "earthquake early warning" (EEW) is used to describe real-time earthquake information systems that have the potential to provide warning prior to significant ground shaking. This is possible

A study on feasibility of earthquake early warning in Korea: Determination of locations and magnitudes of events

The fundamental purpose of an earthquake early warning (EEW) system is to provide an advance warning/alarm of strong ground shaking from large earthquakes that will help to mitigate earthquake

Early magnitude estimation for the MW7.9 Wenchuan earthquake using progressively expanded P-wave time window

The suitability of the existing regression relationships between early warning parameters and magnitude is shown, provided that an appropriate PTW is used for parameter estimation, and the reason for the magnitude underestimation is in part a combined effect of high-pass filtering and frequency dependence of the main radiating source during the rupture process.

RETRACTION: Early magnitude estimation for the MW7.9 Wenchuan earthquake using progressively expanded P-wave time window

An Improved Rapid-Source Parameter Determination System (AQUA) for Giant Earthquakes

Improvement of the rapid earthquake analysis system, accurate and quick analysis system for source parameters (AQUA), which has automatically determined the location, magnitude, and fault type of M < ∼7 earthquakes with good accuracy by analyzing long-period waveform data, is described, which extends the upper limit of applicable magnitudes to M9.0.

Earthquake early warning: what does “seconds before a strong hit” mean?

This article reviews how research and development associated with EEW have been carried out, and how EEW systems presently function, and shows short-wavelength variation of ground motions within the typical station interval of a big-net EEW operation in Japan.

τ c for magnitude estimation for Earthquake Early Warning

We analyzed the waveforms of the mainshock (Mw 9.0) and three foreshocks of the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake during the initial 30 s after P-wave onset to determine the maximum

Real-time earthquake monitoring using a search engine method

An earthquake search engine is presented, similar to a web search engine, that is developed by applying a computer fast search method to a large seismogram database to find waveforms that best fit the input data.

Progress of the earthquake early warning system in Fujian, China

Based on strong ground motion data received in the mainshock of the Wenchuan earthquake, the EEW system developed by the above algorithm is simulated online, and the results show that the system can reduce earthquake hazards effectively.
