OBJECTIVE Currently the detection of renal vascular lesions (VLS) mainly depends on biopsy examination, and lacks surrogate biomarkers for clinical dynamic evaluation. The aim of this study is to find the correlation between numbers of circulating endothelial cells (CECs) and renal VLS in lupus nephritis (LN). METHODS Thirty LN patients with VLS and 30 LN patients without VLS were recruited. Thirty age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers served as controls. CECs were isolated from peripheral…
Primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in nephrotic patients: common complications and risk factors.
TLDR
Logistic regression showed that increased urine retinol-binding protein, decreased serum albumin and IgG, and increased CECs and hemoglobin were independent risk factors for AKI, infection and thromboembolism, respectively.
Clinical characteristics and prognosis of diffuse proliferative lupus nephritis with thrombotic microangiopathy
TLDR
The clinicopathologic characteristics and prognosis of 33 patients with diffuse proliferative lupus nephritis (class IV LN) complicated with thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) with high mortality and low renal survival were analyzed.
Microparticles (CD146) and Arterial Stiffness Versus Carotid Intima Media Thickness as an Early Predictors of Vascular Affection in Systemic Lupus Patients.
TLDR
The results showed that SLE vascular affection is more pronounced in small arteries and elevated CD146 and brachial-femoral PWV are useful early markers of vascular affection in SLE as well as rise time may be a marker for arterial stiffness.
Imbalance of circulating endothelial cells and progenitors in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
TLDR
This study highlights an adaptative process of EPC mobilization in the most severe forms of IPF, that could reflect enhanced homing to the pulmonary vasculature, which clinical consequences remain to be determined.
Circulating Endothelial Cells and Chronic Kidney Disease
TLDR
Measurement of the CEC level would provide an important diagnostic and prognostic value on the endothelium status and the long-term outcome of vascular dysfunction.
Endothelium structure and function in kidney health and disease
TLDR
Therapeutic strategies aimed at preserving and/or restoring the integrity of the endothelial glycocalyx, reversing the procoagulant and pro-inflammatory phenotype of injured endothelial cells and slowing renal fibrosis hold promise for the treatment of renal disease.
Alterations of circulating endothelial cells after apheresis in patients with sickle cell disease: a potential clue for restoration of pathophysiology.
Distinct patterns of circulating endothelial cells in pulmonary hypertension
TLDR
PAH, in contrast to CTEPH, is associated with markers of vascular injury but not with marker of remodelling (endothelial progenitor cells, CD34+CD133+ cells and VEGF), in keeping with the elevated soluble E-selectin and sVCAM levels found in PAH alone.
Lupus nephritis: lessons from murine models
TLDR
Analysis of the mechanisms of action of novel immunomodulatory drugs in multiple models of murine lupus clearly shows that interacting networks of immune and effector pathways are recruited as the disease progresses.

Shedding of endothelial protein C receptor contributes to vasculopathy and renal injury in lupus: in vivo and in vitro evidence.
TLDR
The hypothesis that the vascular dysfunction characteristic of SLE may be related to a dramatically altered distribution of EPCR, both soluble and membrane-bound forms, is supported by this cross-sectional/longitudinal study.
Circulating activated endothelial cells in systemic lupus erythematosus: further evidence for diffuse vasculopathy.
TLDR
Elevated levels of CEC observed in patients with active SLE may represent a marker of endothelial injury, and the activated phenotype of these cells suggests that they may be capable of further potentiating vascular injury by the production of inflammatory and prothrombotic mediators and engaging in heterotypic aggregation with neutrophils or platelets.
Circulating endothelial cells as a prognostic marker in thrombotic microangiopathy.
TLDR
Markedly elevated numbers of CECs reflect severe and widespread endothelial damage in patients with TMA, and cell numbers at presentation and their degree of decrease after 4 sessions of plasma exchange could provide important prognostic clues.

TLDR
Renal histology is mandatory for the diagnosis and the prognostic evaluation of renal vasculopathy in SLE and renal survival was influenced by the extent and severity of vascular lesions.
Circulating endothelial cells in preeclampsia
TLDR
CECs as a marker of endothelial injury were significantly higher in patients with preeclampsia than in hypertensive patients, healthy pregnants and normal controls and significant correlation between CECs and systolic blood pressure and serum homocysteine levels was found in preeclamptic patients.
Lupus vasculopathy combined with acute renal failure in lupus nephritis
TLDR
It is suggested that renal biopsy performed early in SLE patients with renal involvement should be studied carefully for the presence of vascular lesions and plasmapheresis can be considered in patients with LV refractory to other modalities of therapy.
ELEVATED NUMBERS OF CIRCULATING ENDOTHELIAL CELLS IN RENAL TRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS
TLDR
The number of circulating endothelial cells is a novel marker of endothelial damage in renal transplant recipients and there was a significant correlation of cell numbers and serum cyclosporine A trough levels.
Circulating endothelial cells in relapse and limited granulomatous disease due to ANCA associated vasculitis
TLDR
Numbers of circulating endothelial cells (CECs) discriminate active vasculitis from limited granulomatous disease and remission add further proof to the concept of CECs as a marker of ANCA associated small vessel Vasculitis.
