The agar RCPB pH5 has been considered a good alternative for counts of Bifidobacterium in yoghurt. However, during the refrigerated storage of yoghurt it is extremely difficult to count this microorganism due to the size of the colonies, which are so small they require the aid of a stereoscope to count them. Another agar, MRS-LP, has been also recommended for counts of Bifidobacterium in the presence of yoghurt bacteria. This study evaluated the supplementation of RCPB pH5 agar with dehydrated…

Selective detection, isolation and enumeration of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 from Iranian commercial probiotic yoghurts

Although the counts of strain BB-12 had significant decrease during shelf-life, but these counts didn’t fell below CODEX standard, until expiry date of products, the results showed that WCM 100 was completely selective for Bifidobacteria, with the recovery about 100%.

Evaluation of different selective media for enumeration of probiotic micro-organisms in combination with yogurt starter cultures in fermented milk

The aim of this study is to assess selective plating methodologies for the enumeration and identification of Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus, Lactobacillus

Comparison of Three Treatments (Two Fermented Treatments and One Nonfermented Treatment) in Production of Synbiotic Ice Cream

Synbiotic ice cream was produced by adding probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis) and inulin as prebiotic compound. Three samples of synbiotic ice cream were

Survival of Microencapsulated Probiotic Bacteria after Processing and during Storage: A Review

Carohydrate- and protein-based microencapsulants and their combination are discussed in terms of their protecting effect on probiotic bacteria during dehydration, during exposure to harsh gastrointestinal transit and small intestine transit and during storage.

Evaluation of culture media for selective enumeration of bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria

Test the suitability of Transgalactosylated oligosaccharides-mupirocin lithium salt and MRS-clindamycin-ciprofloxacin agars for selectively enumerating bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria species commonly used to make fermented milks found this method proved to be particularly suitable for the selective enumeration of Lactobacillus spp.

Probiotic fermented milks: present and future.

The current status of fermented milk as a vehicle for delivery of beneficial bacteria and look into future new directions and challenges are reviewed.

Evaluation of culture media for counts of Bifidobacterium animalis in the presence of yoghurt bacteria

This study evaluated the use of the media M-MRS, MRS-NNLP and RCPB pH5 aimed at counting the number of Bifidobacterium animalis subesp.

Note: Evaluation of selective media for the enumeration of Bifidobacterium sp. in milk

The AMC agar is a good choice for the routine enumeration of bifidobacteria from mixed cultures as it is based on a commercially available medium, whereas the others must be made up from individual constituents.

Enumeration of starter cultures in fermented milks

Some media available for the isolation and enumeration of starter cultures employed for the manufacture of cheese, yogurt and bio-yogurt were examined and it was noted that variation among different strains of any given species could change the expected reactions, so for quality control purposes the suggested media may need to be modified to cope with the specific cultures in use.

Media for the enumeration of yoghurt bacteria

Lithium chloride-sodium propionate agar for the enumeration of bifidobacteria in fermented dairy products.

With one exception, all bifidobacteria were able to grow in this medium and in a nonselective agar with a difference not exceeding .4 log units, and none of the lactobacilli tested and only one strain each of Streptococcus salivarius ssp.

An elective and selective isolation medium for Bifidobacterium spp.

A modified Columbia agar medium, containing 5 or 10 ml/l propionic acid and adjusted to pH 5.0, is described. The medium is both elective and selective for bifidobacteria.
