Foodborne outbreaks of listeriosis, human infection with Listeria monocytogenes, are relatively uncommon with approximately 0.1–1.1 cases /100 000 population globally, but high mortality rates of 20–30% are associated with infection (Siegman-Igra et al., 2002; Anonymous, 2012).
