RationaleAcute systemic ethanol administration is known to elevate plasma and cerebral levels of neuroactive steroid 3α-hydroxy-5α-pregnane-20-one (3α, 5α-THP; allopregnanolone) to a concentration sufficient to potentiate GABAA receptors.
