Revenue potential from offshore wind and energy storage systems for a Long Island node in the New York ISO (NYISO) is examined using advanced lithium-ion battery representations. These advanced mixed-integer-linear battery models account for the dynamic performance, as well as the degradation behavior of the batteries, which are usually not accounted for in power systems models. Multiple hybrid offshore wind and battery system designs are investigated to examine the impact of locating the…

Enhanced Representations of Lithium-Ion Batteries in Power Systems Models and Their Effect on the Valuation of Energy Arbitrage Applications
TLDR
A techno-economic analysis of the performance of a 10Β MWh lithium-ion battery system testing the effect of a 5-min vs. a 60-min price signal on profits using real time prices from a selected node in the MISO electricity market indicates that a more accurate representation of li-ion batteries as well as the market rules that govern the frequency of electricity prices can play a major role on the estimation of the value of battery technologies for power grid applications.
Modeling of Lithium-Ion Battery Degradation for Cell Life Assessment
TLDR
A semi-empirical lithium-ion battery degradation model that assesses battery cell life loss from operating profiles is proposed, combining fundamental theories of battery degradation and observations in battery aging test results.
Optimal Bidding Strategy of Battery Storage in Power Markets Considering Performance-Based Regulation and Battery Cycle Life
TLDR
A novel bidding model is incorporated into a profit maximization model to determine the optimal bids in day-ahead energy, spinning reserve, and regulation markets and a decomposed online calculation method to compute cycle life under different operational strategies is proposed to reduce the complexity of the model.
