OBJECTIVE The purpose of this article is to describe the evaluation of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPS) and the management of dysfunctional shunts. CONCLUSION TIPS can become dysfunctional if stenosis develops in the shunt or the hepatic vein above the shunt. Screening allows detection of stenoses before portal hypertensive-related complications recur. Revision of stenotic shunts can be easily accomplished in most cases.
