BACKGROUND Cancer chemotherapeutic regimens have become more potent and myeloablative. As a consequence, morbidity and mortality due to opportunistic infections have become a major challenge. The provision of adequate doses of viable granulocytes has thus become an important approach for circumventing the problem.
