Objective To perform a European sentinel surveillance study for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Neisseria gonorrhoeae as part of the European Surveillance of Sexually Transmitted Infections Programme. Methods From 2006 to 2008 17 countries participated in the AMR surveillance programme. The susceptibility of a total of 3528 consecutive isolates was tested using the agar dilution breakpoint technique or Etests for ciprofloxacin, penicillin, tetracycline, azithromycin, spectinomycin and…
An evaluation of gentamicin susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates in Europe.
TLDR
This is the first reported evidence that the European gonococcal population susceptibility to gentamicin is similar to that reported in other world regions.
The European gonococcal antimicrobial surveillance programme, 2009.
TLDR
Results from 17 EU/EEA Member States in 2009 showed that 5% of isolates had decreased susceptibility to cefixime, an upward trend in the minimum inhibitory concentrations of ceftriaxone and a high prevalence of resistance to ciprofloxacin and azithromycin.
Changing Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles among Neisseria gonorrhoeae Isolates in Italy, 2003 to 2012
TLDR
A change in the antimicrobial resistance profiles among gonococci was identified in Italy together with a percentage of MDR isolates, following an increasing trend up to 64% in 2012.

TLDR
The Canadian study reports on antimicrobial susceptibilities of N. gonorrhoeae collected from Canadian provinces between 2000 and 2009 shows that the Canadian national surveillance system had not “lapsed” over this time period but was on-going, and shows that, over time, the number of cultures obtained for AMR testing represented fewer of the total number of cases reported.
Trends in Antimicrobial Resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae Isolated From Korean Patients From 2000 to 2006
TLDR
The incidence ofPenicillinase-producing N. gonorrhoeae declined significantly, but none of the isolates were susceptible to penicillin G, and the relationship between fluoroquinolone nonsusceptibility and amino acid substitutions within the fluoroquolone resistance-determining regions in Korea was investigated.
Cephalosporin and Azithromycin Susceptibility in Neisseria gonorrhoeae Isolates by Site of Infection, British Columbia, 2006 to 2011
TLDR
Increases in elevated MIC of cefixime/ceftriaxone/azithromycin were superimposed on a background of established resistance to penicillin, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin and may signal impending gonococcal resistance to first-line treatments.
Epidemiology, molecular characterisation and antimicrobial susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates in Madrid, Spain, in 2016
TLDR
A significant association was evident between HIV-positive MSM individuals and having a ciprofloxacin-resistant strain, and a strong association was found between patient age of MSM and carriage of isolates expressing decreased susceptibility to azithromycin.
Gonorrhoea and gonococcal antimicrobial resistance surveillance networks in the WHO European Region, including the independent countries of the former Soviet Union
TLDR
The WHO European Region has a high prevalence of resistance to all previously recommended antimicrobials, and most of the first strictly verified treatment failures with cefixime and ceftriaxone were also reported from Europe.
Antimicrobial resistance and molecular characteristics of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates from MSM
TLDR
The results of this study reinforce the importance of developing new therapeutic options in a short time period and reinforce the need to identify mutations within penA, mtrR, gyrA and parC genes in intermediate or full resistance isolates.

Increasing trend in gonococcal resistance to ciprofloxacin in The Netherlands, 2006–8
TLDR
Ciprofloxacin resistance in The Netherlands is increasing, and is particularly found in MSM, older women, and female sex workers, and in men having sex with men (MSM) and women aged over 35 years.
Azithromycin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains recently isolated in Italy.
TLDR
This study represents a reference point for future surveillance in Italy and suggests the need to add azithromycin to the antibiotic susceptibility panel for gonococci.
National surveillance of antimicrobial susceptibility in Neisseria gonorrhoeae in 2005–2006 and recommendations of first-line antimicrobial drugs for gonorrhoea treatment in Russia
TLDR
In Russia, penicillins, ciprofloxacin, or tetracycline should definitively not be used in the empirical treatment of gonorrhoea and the recommended first-line antimicrobial drug should be ceftriaxone.
European Surveillance of Sexually Transmitted Infections (ESSTI): the first combined antimicrobial susceptibility data for Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Western Europe.
TLDR
These are the first sentinel surveillance data for Western Europe for N. gonorrhoeae and they have implications for choice of antimicrobial for treatment of gon orrhoea on a European and a local level.
Changing Figures of Antimicrobial Susceptibility and Serovar Distribution in Neisseria gonorrhoeae Isolated in Greece
TLDR
Antimicrobial susceptibility figures of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Greece are worsening due to changes in the synthesis of gonococcal population, resulting from high endemicity rates of multidrug-resistant strains.
Challenges in the Control of Gonorrhea in South America and the Caribbean: Monitoring the Development of Resistance to Antibiotics
Objective: The objective of this study was to ascertain the antimicrobial susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates from 6 South American and 13 Caribbean countries participating in the
Antimicrobial resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates from the Stuttgart and Heidelberg areas of southern Germany
TLDR
Data indicate a high prevalence of N. gonorrhoeae strains resistant to the antimicrobial agents currently used to treat gonococcal infections in the Heidelberg and Stuttgart areas, and illustrate the need to establish an antimicrobial resistance surveillance system in order to control gonor rhoea effectively.
Emergence of high-level azithromycin resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae in England and Wales.
TLDR
High-level azithromycin resistance has emerged in England and Wales and contact tracing and typing data suggest this may have originated from Scotland.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae antibiotic resistance in Paris, 2005 to 2007: implications for treatment guidelines.
TLDR
The antimicrobial susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in a venereology clinic in Paris, between 2005 and 2007, was appraised, without significant association with gender, age, sexual behaviour, past history of sexually transmitted diseases and susceptibility to other antibiotics.
