Ethological aspects of leg fractures in deep litter laying chickens.

Abstract

Unilateral leg fractures in chickens on deep litter were investigated when 15 cases (0.21%), all hens, had occurred during 40 weeks and ethological factors were suspected. A significant subsequent reduction to three cases in 33 weeks followed advice to farm staff on their footwork and the avoidance of sexually crouching hens.
