To attain both high productivity and efficient recovery of ethanol from broth, a membrane bioreactor consisting of a jar fermentor and a pervaporation system was applied to the direct production of ethanol from uncooked starch with a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium, Clostridium thermohydrosulfuricum.
