Astrocyte and glial-neuron interactions have a critical role in brain development, which is partially mediated by glycoproteins, including adhesion molecules and growth factors. Ethanol affects the synthesis, intracellular transport, subcellular distribution and secretion of these glycoproteins, suggesting alterations in glycosylation.
