Samples of seawater and surface sediment were collected from seven locations around Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada, and analyzed for the presence of the organic estrogenic contaminants, bisphenol A (BPA), 17β‐estradiol (E2), and 17α‐ethinylestradiol (EE2). Natural and Synthetic Estrogens in Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluent and the Coastal Ocean

A tandem mass spectrometry method capable of simultaneously quantifying free, conjugated, and halogenated estrogens at picomolar levels in wastewater effluent and coastal seawater is developed and found that synthetic estrogens and progestogens in commercial and pharmaceutical preparations exhibit significantly depleted 13C values compared to endogenous steroids.

Influence of poultry litter land application on the concentrations of estrogens in water and sediment within a watershed.

The quantitative analysis of the temporal and spatial distribution of the estrogens suggests the occasional elevation of estrogens in the watershed above the predicted-no-effect-concentrations to fish likely to be associated with litter disposal and rainfall events.
