Estimates of the risk of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have been limited to studies involving homosexual men, transfusion recipients, and hemophiliac subjects. Little is known, however, about the natural history of the human immunodeficiency virus infection in intravenous drug users.
