Values of the D period, between termination of chromosome replication and cell division, were determined from measurements of residual cell division after exposure of exponential phase cultures of Escherichia coli B/r and K12 and of Salmonella typhimurium to chloramphenicol. The results obtained by this method were compared with earlier results for E. coli B/r obtained from measurements of DNA content per cell and were found to be almost identical.
