Estimation of ketone bodies in urine detects the presence of toxin of C. diphtheria. It is also seen in Diphtheritic myocarditis as the toxin causes lysis of myocardial cells. Clinical diphtheria is on rise worldwide today and leads to the development of complicated diphtheria. Whenever clinical diphtheriae is diagnosed, there is a definite need for further laboratory evidence of elevated ketone body levels in the urine samples as it indicates the presence of toxin.
