The effects of mixtures of chemicals are most often reported to consist of psychological and neurological disorders, toxic liver disease, nephropathy, respiratory diseases, etc. As the factors usually act at low intensity one could expect mild or even subtle changes in the different organ and system functions. This is the reason to suggest using a complex of sensitive methods and tests that allow an estimation of minor functional disturbances in separate organs. For the investigation of the… Expand

TLDR
The hypothesis that pesticide exposure results in subtle biochemical liver toxicity is supported and the role of genetic polymorphisms in pesticide-metabolizing enzymes as biomarkers of susceptibility for developing adverse health effects is highlighted. Expand

EEG, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND NEUROLOGICAL ALTERATIONS IN HUMANS WITH ORGANOPHOSPHORUS EXPOSURE *
TLDR
In the early 195O’s, the University of Colorado Medical Center conducted a multidisciplinary investigation of industrial and agricultural workers acutely exposed to a variety of pesticides, finding an increase in medium-voltage, irregular theta activity, OCurring in bursts of one to five seconds’ duration, most often seen during light drowsiness. The epidemiologic assessment of male reproductive hazard from occupational exposure to TDA and DNT.
TLDR
Although both TDA and DNT are readily absorbed (percutaneous, inhalation, ingestion), they did not present detectable reproductive hazard to the workers. Expand
Metabolic Interactions Among Environmental Chemicals and Drugs
TLDR
Research into metabolic interactions among drugs, insecticides, food additives, carcinogenic hydrocarbons, and a variety of environmental chemicals provides information that is helpful in the evaluation of the safety and efficacy of drugs and environmental chemicals, and suggests new directions for further research. Expand
Neuromuscular function in pesticide workers
TLDR
It is concluded that measurement of blood cholinesterase activity does not provide a sensitive index of functional impairment of nerve and muscle. Expand
Mutagenicity in urine of workers in rubber industry.
TLDR
The extent of mutagenicity in the urine of workers who smoked suggested a synergistic effect of smoking and occupational exposure, and the method can be used to identify hazardous working conditions long before the manifestation of possible pathological changes in exposed individuals. Expand
Genetic risks and environmental surveillance: epidemiological aspects of monitoring industrial populations for environmental mutagens.
TLDR
Since fetal death and infertility are strongly, but not exclusively, correlated with mutation, these methods can be considered as an early-warning system to indicate when and where more definitive studies are needed. Expand
Decreased plasma half-life of phenylbutazone in workers exposed to chlorinated pesticides
SummaryThe plasma half-life of a single oral dose of phenylbutazone was investigated in 14 men occupationally exposed to a mixture of insecticides, mainly lindane, and in 12 matched controls withExpand

A method for monitoring the fertility of workers. 2. Validation of the method among workers exposed to dibromochloropropane.
TLDR
A method has been developed for monitoring industrial workers and others exposed to environmental agents which may impair fertility and it is demonstrated that the surveillance technique would have been capable of detecting occupationally induced infertility among workers in advance of the actual discovery date. Reproductive hazards of industrial chemicals
Reproductive hazards of 48 chemicals are surveyed. For each, there is an evaluation of human and animal studies (where available), subdivided into sections on pharmacology and toxicology, endocrineExpand
