Diel oxygen-curve techniques were used to estimate gross primary productivity (PG), community respiration and net daily metabolism (NDM) for five reaches of the La Trobe River from headwaters to lowlands. All reaches were heterotrophic throughout the study (December 1980-November 1981) with NDM ranging from - 1 to -6 g O2 m-2.
