From the years 1991 to 2000, basic data from patients admitted to the intensive care unit of burn centres in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, participating in the German Speaking Association for Burn Treatment, were collected prospectively. Starting in 1991 with 7 hospitals and 618 patients included in the study; in the year 2000, 19 hospitals representing nearly 1500 patients submitted their data.
