Esophageal dysmotility is a considerable long-term issue in patients born with esophageal atresia (EA). To better characterize it, the normal esophageal motility is briefly reviewed with emphasis on the specific defects in EA. Multiple studies attempted to describe the dysmotility seen in patients with operated EA using esophageal manometry. Recently, high-resolution manometry has improved our understanding of normal esophageal motility. Using this new technology, it is now possible to better…
Swallowing dysfunction in patients with esophageal atresia-tracheoesophageal fistula: infancy to adulthood
Esophageal dysfunction is a common problem in children with repaired esophageal atresia-tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF) and considered as a long-term sequel of the cases. Impaired esophageal

TLDR
Pressure-flow analysis (PFA), a recent method, uses simultaneously acquired impedance and manometry measurements, and applies an integrated analysis of these recordings to derive quantitative pressure-flow metrics, which have the potential to guide therapeutic decisions for esophageal dysmotility in pediatric patients with esphageal atresia.
Esophageal Atresia: Future Directions for Research on the Digestive Tract.
TLDR
Although the consequences of esophageal motility disorders are very relevant in the clinical setting, research remains largely underexplored, so it is suggested integrating motility function assessment in the existing research models.
The Relevance of Spastic Esophageal Disorders as a Diagnostic Category
TLDR
Although jackhammer esophagus, distal esophageal spasm, and type III achalasia frequently overlap in terms of their clinical presentation and available management approaches, the divergences in their respective diagnostic criteria suggest that additional study may reveal additional mechanistic distinctions that lead in turn to further refinements in therapeutic decision-making.
Ultrastructural Changes of the Smooth Muscle in Esophageal Atresia
TLDR
The most significant ultrastructural changes of the smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are described trying to highlight some of the underlying mechanisms of esophageal dysmotility following EA/TEF repair.
Current Advancement on the Dynamic Mechanism of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
TLDR
Current advancements in the dynamic mechanism of GERD are reviewed to better counsel patients on possible treatment options and explore potential and effective therapeutic targets.
The morphopathological particuliarities of intrinsic innervation of the esophagus in newborns with esophageal atresia and inferior tracheoesophageal fistula
TLDR
Congenital morphopathological modifications of intramural ganglio-neural structures determined in both esophageal segments in cases of esphageal atresia with inferior tracheoesophageaal fistula, concomitant with fibromuscular dysplasia, may be considered as factors with significant impact on esophagingal motility regulation.
Upper gastrointestinal motility: prenatal development and problems in infancy
TLDR
The prenatal development of upper gastrointestinal motility is highlighted and the most common motility disorders that occur in early infancy are described.
The assessment of the esophageal motility of children with esophageal disorders by the detailed observation of the pH–multichannel intraluminal impedance waveform and baseline impedance: screening test potential
TLDR
It is demonstrated that the detailed observation of the pH/MII waveforms in all channels and the analysis of baseline impedance (BI) values were useful for evaluating esophageal motility in children with congenital esphageal disorders.

TLDR
The incidence of luminal strictures and the persistent dysphagia and/or lymphocytosis present in some patients provide evidence that LE is a chronic inflammatory disorder, at least within a subset of individuals.

Characterization of Esophageal Motility Following Esophageal Atresia Repair Using High-Resolution Esophageal Manometry
TLDR
HREM improves the understanding and allows precise characterization of esophageal dysmotility in patients who have undergone EA repair, and compared these patterns of Dysmotility with symptomatology.
Gastric motility disorders in patients operated on for esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula: long-term evaluation.
TLDR
Delayed gastric emptying is frequent in long-term follow-up of patients operated on for EA-TEF and in these patients antral hypomotility also is recorded manometrically, suggesting abnormal gastric motility can be considered as an important factor predisposing to symptoms of GER.
Esophageal Motility in Children With Suspected Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
TLDR
Pressure and velocity of propagation in the proximal and distal esophagus decreased with age in this group of children with GERD, and esophageal manometry is severely impaired in children with esphageal atresia and psychomotor retardation.
Reduction of Interstitial Cells of Cajal in Esophageal Atresia
TLDR
The significant lower ICC density in EA-TEF is in favor for the pathogenesis of esophageal dysmotility frequently observed in such patients.

TLDR
The pressure and contractility profile of the esophagus was abnormal in the majority of patients, even in the absence of symptoms, and the mean body pressures were highest with "Excellent" results and lowest with "Fair" results.
Long-term evaluation of esophageal function in patients treated at birth for esophageal atresia
TLDR
In this series, esophageal dismotilty seems to be the main consequence of EA without any relevant disturbance of normal nutritional habit.
