The pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis (SS) is complex and not completely understood. Autoimmune mechanisms, vascular damage, and excessive extracelular matrix with collagen deposition play a significant role. Genetic and environmental factors also are decisive to the disease expression. Among environmental factors many chemical agents have been associated with the development of SS.
