The global agenda for malaria eradication would benefit from development of a highly efficacious vaccine that protects against disease and interrupts transmission of Plasmodium falciparum. It is likely that such a vaccine will be multi-component, with antigens from different stages of the parasite life cycle. In this review, inclusion of blood stage antigens in such a vaccine is discussed.
