During organogenesis, the middle to caudal portion of Müllerian epithelium differentiates into uterine and vaginal epithelia in females. Functional differentiation of uterine and vaginal epithelia occurs in adulthood, and is regulated by 17beta-estradiol (E(2)) and progesterone.
