In mature, differentiated neurons in the central nervous system (CNS), epigenetic mechanisms--including DNA methylation, histone modification, and regulatory noncoding RNAs--play critical roles in encoding experience and environmental stimuli into stable, behaviorally meaningful changes in gene expression.
