}SUMMARY A health emergency situation occurred in Bulgaria in 2007 when positive rabies cases were notified in Sofia district in the central-western part of the country, suggesting a southward spread of the disease for the first time in the last 10 years. Phylogenetic analysis on 49 isolates sampled between 2009 and 2011 showed, for the first time, evidence of the existence of NEE and D clustered lineages in Bulgaria. Their geographical distribution clearly reveals the permeability of natural…

A retrospective epidemiological study was conducted in Varna region between 2014 and 2018, which in-cluded 1462 persons who suffered injuries from animals and results were analyzed using SPSS v. 20 employing variational and comparative analyses.
Zoning of the republic of Kazakhstan as to the risk of natural focal diseases in animals: the case of rabies and anthrax
- Environmental Science
- 2020
Rabies and anthrax, being natural focal diseases, are characterized by the ability to persist in areas with a certain combination of environmental factors without human intervention. These infections…
Detection of rabies antibodies in wild boars in north-east Romania by a rabies ELISA test
- BiologyBMC Veterinary Research
- 2019
This study reports for the first time the presence of rabies antibodies in wild boar samples collected during the hunting season in Romania after ORV campaigns in rabies endemic areas and is the first study to demonstrate that ELISA BioPro can be used on wild boars samples with satisfactory results compared to the FAVN test for this species.
Rabies outbreak in Greece during 2012–2014: use of Geographical Information System for analysis, risk assessment and control
- Geography, MedicineEpidemiology and Infection
- 2016
G geographical analysis of the 2012–2014 outbreak of rabies in Greece using GIS and comparative analysis of animal cases with data of potential human exposure to rabies together with environmental data, in order to provide information for risk assessment, effective monitoring and control are provided.
Zoning the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan as to the risk of rabies among various categories of animals.
- Medicine, BiologyGeospatial health
- 2016
This paper presents the zoning of the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan with respect to the risk of rabies outbreaks in domestic and wild animals considering environmental and climatic conditions and produces a map of integral risk to allow developing a set of preventive measures.

Ecology and evolution of rabies virus in Europe.
- BiologyThe Journal of general virology
- 1999
The evolution of rabies viruses of predominantly European origin was studied by comparing nucleotide sequences of the nucleoprotein and glycoprotein genes, and by typing isolates using RFLP, revealing a number of distinct groups, each associated with a particular geographical area.

Molecular diversity and evolutionary history of rabies virus strains circulating in the Balkans.
- BiologyThe Journal of general virology
- 2011
Bayesian coalescent analysis estimated the date of the most common recent ancestor of the Balkan RABV to be 1885 (95 % HPD, 1852-1913), and skyline plots suggested an expansion of the local viral population in 1980-1990, which coincides with the observed emergence of fox rabies in the region.

Several different strains of classical rabies virus co-circulate in Europe and a 400 bp region of the nucleoprotein gene was sequenced and compared with more than 500 European virus isolates to investigate the roles of the host species and topography on the molecular epidemiology of these viruses.

All countries (except Albania and Greece which are reported as rabies-free) are currently enrolled in oral vaccination programmes which started in Kosovo in spring 2010, and in Bulgaria, the first oral vaccination campaign was implemented in spring 2009 as well.

- BiologyEpidemiology and Infection

Spatial analysis unexpectedly identified fox rabies hotspots above the threshold altitudes, probably representing local residual rabies foci which may have contributed to maintaining the infectious cycle in areas not vaccinated at higher altitudes.

In 1999 to 2004, vaccine contact and induction of immunity in animals collected from the vaccination zones were reflected by seroconversion in 66 of 284 animals (23 %), and by the year 2004, rabies cases declined sharply in all progressively vaccinated areas.
