Comprehensive data describing epidemiological characteristics of the human herpesvirus‐8 or Kaposi's sarcoma‐associated herpesvirus (HHV‐8 or KSHV) infection among pregnant women in a central sub‐Saharan Africa are not available. This study determined virus prevalence estimates and the risk factors associated with HHV‐8 infection. Cross‐sectional, enrollment visit data were analyzed from a prospective cohort study of perinatal transmission of HHV‐8 in Lusaka, Zambia. Exposure data were obtained…
Seroprevalence of human herpesvirus 8 infection in individuals from health care centers in Mozambique: Potential for endemic and epidemic Kaposi's sarcoma
The results demonstrate that Mozambique is another country in Africa with endemic HHV‐8 infection, and, because of the AIDS epidemic, continued access to antiretroviral treatment is necessary to avert an outbreak of AIDS‐Kaposi's sarcoma.

HIV-8 and HIV-1 infection did not have common sexual risk factors among urban Zimbabwean men and sexual transmission does not explain the high prevalence of HHV-8 in this population.
Human herpesvirus 8: Serovprevalence and correlates in tumor patients from Xinjiang, China
The results suggest that unlike other parts of mainland of China, Xinjiang is an area with a high prevalence of HHV‐8 infection, and Logistic regression analysis suggests that the age is a risk factor associated with HHV-8 infection.
Human herpesvirus 8 infection in children and adults in a population-based study in rural Uganda.
The data suggest that HHV-8 is acquired primarily through horizontal transmission in childhood from intrafamilial contacts and that transmission continues into adulthood potentially through nonsexual routes.
Seroprevalence and determinants of Kaposi sarcoma-associated human herpesvirus 8 in Indian HIV-infected males.
Finding that the prevalence of antibodies against HHV-8 in North Indian HIV-infected men naive of antiretroviral therapy (ART) suggests that even in a heterosexual population, HHv-8 can be transmitted frequently.
Kaposi's Sarcoma Associated-Herpes Virus (KSHV) Seroprevalence in Pregnant Women in
The association between KSHV and HIV seropositivity and a lack of common association with syphilis, suggests that Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus transmission may involve geographical and cultural factors other than sexual transmission.
Seroprevalence of human herpesvirus 8 in Ireland among blood donors, men who have sex with men, and heterosexual genitourinary medicine and infectious diseases clinic attendees
The proportion of HHV‐8 seropositivity in the MSM population was significantly higher than in the heterosexual population and most marked in HIV‐positive MSM, and the absence of seropositive in 200 Irish blood donors may suggest that Ireland has a low overall population HHV-8Seroprevalence.
No evidence of sexual transmission of Kaposi's sarcoma herpes virus in a heterosexual South African population
The lack of association with high-risk sexual behavior, particularly in sex workers, and with any markers of STI strongly suggest that the sexual mode does not play a significant role in KSHV transmission in this South African population.
The epidemiology of Kaposi’s sarcoma associated-herpesvirus in Uganda
An investigation of factors that might impact on transmission of Kaposi’s sarcoma associated-herpesvirus (KSHV) and the first prospective study of antibody titre to KSHV to determine risk of KS from Africa are described and reported.
Diverse genotypes of Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus (KSHV) identified in infant blood infections in African childhood-KS and HIV/AIDS endemic region
Analysis of blood infections of 200 hospitalized infants with symptoms of fever as well as upper respiratory tract infection, diarrhoea, rash or rhinitis supports the interpretation that the acquisition of childhood KSHV infections and subsequent development of KS are due to additional co‐factors.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Human Herpesvirus 8 Infection in Northern Cameroon
The high prevalence of HHV‐8 infection among children indicates nonsexual modes of transmission in Cameroon, with sexual transmission occurring among adolescents and adults.
Correlates of human herpesvirus 8 seropositivity among heterosexual men in Kenya
Infection was more common among men who were uncircumcised or who had ever had syphilis and was less common among those who hadEver used condoms, suggesting that sexual factors may play a role in HHV-8 transmission.
Transmission of human herpesvirus 8 by sexual activity among adults in Lagos, Nigeria
The higher prevalence of HHV-8 antibody in groups with multiple sexual partners and the association with STD among individuals both support the sexual transmission of HHv-8 in African adults.
Human herpesvirus 8: seroprevalence and correlates in prostitutes in Mombasa, Kenya.
It is suggested that heterosexual transmission may contribute to acquisition of HHV-8 infections in this African population of prostitutes.
Prevalence of Kaposi's sarcoma‐associated herpesvirus infection in sex workers and women from the general population in Spain
Prevalence of Kaposi's sarcoma‐associated herpesvirus infection was examined among women in the Spanish general population and among sex workers, and results suggest that in low‐risk countries for KSHV, oral shedding and heterosexual contacts are potential pathways for K SHV transmission.
The sero‐epidemiology of Kaposi's sarcoma‐associated herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV‐8) in adults with cancer in Uganda
In this population in Uganda, where KSHV is relatively common, the prevalence of anti‐KSHV antibodies increased with age but showed little association with nearly 50 other factors studied.

Human herpesvirus 8 infection within families in rural Tanzania.
The data are consistent with the occurrence of HHV-8 transmission within families, from mothers and other relatives to children via nonsexual routes and between spouses via sexual routes.
Kaposi's sarcoma in Uganda: risk factors for human herpesvirus 8 infection among blood donors.
The association between HHV-8 and HBsAg positivity and the lack of association betweenHHV-9 and age point to primarily nonsexual HHV8 transmission during childhood, and the association with HIV indicates sexual transmission may also occur.
