Abstract The effect of pH, temperature, light intensity and concentration of carbon source/e− donor and nitrogen source on the regulation of biomass yield and photoproduction of hydrogen (the fuel of the future) by a purple non-sulfur photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodobacter sphaeroides O.U. 001, was studied. The importance of culture density and age on the hydrogen photoproduction is also discussed.
