Radiation therapy is a widely used treatment for brain tumors but it can cause delayed progressive cognitive decline and memory deficits. Previous studies suggested that this neurocognitive dysfunction might be linked to the impairment of hippocampal neurogenesis. However, little is known regarding how to reduce the cognitive impairment caused by radiation therapy. To investigate whether environmental enrichment (EE) promotes neurogenesis and cognitive function after irradiation, irradiated…
Is exposure to enriched environment beneficial for functional post-lesional recovery in temporal lobe epilepsy?
Enhanced Lithium‐Induced Brain Recovery Following Cranial Irradiation Is Not Impeded by Inflammation
TLDR
It is found that lithium stimulated brain progenitor cell proliferation and differentiation following cranial irradiation while also preventing oligodendrocyte loss in the dentate gyrus of juvenile mice, suggesting that lithium is superior in its restorative effects to blocking inflammation alone, at least in the case of Am80.
Ionizing radiation impairs the formation of trace fear memories and reduces hippocampal neurogenesis.
TLDR
The results strongly indicate that irradiation impairs associative memories dependent on hippocampus and this deficit is accompanied by a decrease in granule cell neurogenesis indicating that these cells may be involved in normal hippocampal memory function.
Decreased cytogenesis in the granule cell layer of the hippocampus and impaired place learning after irradiation of the young mouse brain evaluated using the IntelliCage platform
TLDR
It is concluded that this experimental paradigm provides a novel and time-saving model to detect differences in place learning in mice subjected to IR and can be used for further studies of adverse effects ofIR on hippocampal neurogenesis and possible new strategies to ameliorate the negative effects of IR on cognition.
Voluntary running prevents progressive memory decline and increases adult hippocampal neurogenesis and growth factor expression after whole-brain irradiation.
TLDR
Findings show that running can abrogate this memory decline and aid recovery of adult hippocampal plasticity, thus highlighting exercise as a potential therapeutic intervention.
C3 deficiency ameliorates the negative effects of irradiation of the young brain on hippocampal development and learning
TLDR
Data show that the complement system contributes to IR-induced loss of proliferating cells and maladaptive inflammatory responses in the acute phase after IR, leading to impaired learning capacity in adulthood, promising for future strategies to reduce the long-term adverse consequences of IR in the young brain.
Neural Precursor Cells and CNS Radiation Sensitivity
TLDR
The data from cell culture and animal-based studies provide complementary information relevant to a potentially serious complication of cranial radiotherapy, and should enhance the understanding of the tolerance of normal brain after cranial irradiation.

Radiation-induced impairment of hippocampal neurogenesis is associated with cognitive deficits in young mice
Extreme sensitivity of adult neurogenesis to low doses of X-irradiation.
TLDR
The data suggest that precursor cell radiation response and altered neurogenesis may play a contributory if not causative role in radiation-induced cognitive impairment.
Irradiation induces neural precursor-cell dysfunction
TLDR
It is shown that the deficit in neurogenesis reflects alterations in the microenvironment that regulates progenitor-cell fate, as well as a defect in the proliferative capacity of the neural progenitors in the irradiated hippocampus.
Irradiation attenuates neurogenesis and exacerbates ischemia‐induced deficits
TLDR
Impairments after cerebral global ischemia under conditions of reduced neurogenesis support a role for the production of new cells in mediating functional recovery, and suggest that functional recovery after stroke may be attributed in part to neural regeneration.
Radiation injury and neurogenesis
TLDR
Progressive learning and memory deficits following irradiation may be caused by the accumulating hippocampal dysfunction that results from a long-term absence of normal stem/progenitor activity.
Enriched environment increases neurogenesis in the adult rat dentate gyrus and improves spatial memory.
TLDR
It is shown that adult rats housed in an enriched environment show improved performance in a spatial learning test, suggesting that environmental cues can enhance neurogenesis in the adult hippocampal region, which is associated with improved spatial memory.
Environmental enrichment inhibits spontaneous apoptosis, prevents seizures and is neuroprotective
TLDR
In addition to its effects on neurogenesis, an enriched environment reduces spontaneous apoptotic cell death in the rat hippocampus by 45%.
Neuroplasticity in old age: Sustained fivefold induction of hippocampal neurogenesis by long‐term environmental enrichment
TLDR
In mice signs of neuronal aging can be diminished by a sustained active and challenging life, even if this stimulation started only at medium age, because activity exerts not only an acute but also a sustained effect on brain plasticity.
Radiation-Induced Cognitive Impairments are Associated with Changes in Indicators of Hippocampal Neurogenesis
TLDR
It is shown that the Barnes maze is particularly sensitive for the detection of radiation-induced cognitive deficits in young adult mice and the significant loss of proliferating SGZ cells and their progeny suggests a contributory role of reduced neurogenesis in the pathogenesis of radiation -induced cognitive impairments.
