We show how the Shannon entropy function can be used as a basis to set up complexity measures weighting the economic efficiency of countries and the specialization of products beyond bare diversification. This entropy function guarantees the existence of a fixed point which is rapidly reached by an iterative scheme converging to our self-consistent measures. Our approach naturally allows to decompose into inter-sectorial and intra-sectorial contributions the country competitivity measure if…

A network approach to rank countries chasing sustainable development

It is shown that the network representation of the countries-SDGs relations as a bipartite system allows one to recover aggregate scores of countries' capacity to cope with SDGs as the solutions of a network's centrality exercise.

SoK: Blockchain Decentralization

A systematization of knowledge (SoK) on blockchain decentralization is explored by comprehensively analyzing existing studies in various aspects, and a decentralization index for blockchain transactions is proposed.

Negative pressure wave denoising based on VMD and its application in pipeline leak location

An adaptive noise reduction method based on variational mode decomposition (ANR-VMD) is proposed to improve the accuracy of leak location by optimizing the number of decomposition layer of VMD by the minimum information entropy.

Growth dynamics and complexity of national economies in the global trade network

A dynamic model is set up and economic complexity measures based on panel data concerning up to 1238 exports of 223 countries for 21 years are constructed, allowing clear distinctions, from multiple perspectives, among developed, emerging, underdeveloped and risky economies.

A New and Stable Estimation Method of Country Economic Fitness and Product Complexity

The new indicator of country net-efficiency quantifying how a country efficiently invests in capabilities able to generate innovative complex high quality products is defined, and analytically the local convergence of the algorithm involved is demonstrated.

Data Driven Approach to the Dynamics of Import and Export of G7 Countries

The dynamics of imports plus exports of 226 product classes by the G7 countries between 1962 and 2000 is described in terms of stochastic differential equations. The model allows interesting

A New Metrics for Countries' Fitness and Products' Complexity

It is shown that a non-linear iteration is necessary to bound the complexity of products by the fitness of the less competitive countries exporting them, and the correct and simplest approach to measure the competitiveness of countries is the one presented in this work.

On Economic Complexity and the Fitness of Nations

This paper provides theoretical and numerical evidence for the intrinsic instability in the nonlinear definition of the FC algorithm, and performs an in-depth evaluation of the algorithm’s rankings in two real world networks at the country level: the global trade network, and the patent network in different technological domains.

Export dynamics as an optimal growth problem in the network of global economy

A dynamical model is set up to identify and quantify plausible mechanisms by which the evolutions of the various exports affect each other, pursued through a stochastic differential description, which warrants a close-to-maximum growth rate under the transient conditions realized in the period covered by data.

The building blocks of economic complexity

It is shown that it is possible to quantify the complexity of a country's economy by characterizing the structure of this bipartite network in which countries are connected to the products they export, and that deviations from this relationship are predictive of future growth.

Entropy Measure of Diversification and Corporate Growth

During the past decade or more, a number of authors have proposed (and applied) a number of measures of corporate diversification. These have ranged from simple counts of the number of products to

The Atlas of Economic Complexity: Mapping Paths to Prosperity

Why do some countries grow and others do not? The authors of The Atlas of Economic Complexity offer readers an explanation based on "Economic Complexity," a measure of a society’s productive

Quality Ladders in the Theory of Growth

We develop a model of repeated product improvements in a continuum of sectors. Each product follows a stochastic progression up a quality ladder. Progress is not uniform across sectors, so an
