Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most common form of the disease and its complications constitute a major public health problem. Currently, there is much interest in the usefulness of seaweeds for the treatment of T2DM. We have attempted to investigate the anti-hyperglycemic, anti-hyperlipidemic and insulin sensitizing effects of Enteromorpha flexuosa in an established model of T2DM characterized by insulin resistance. Rats were fed 30% fructose solution in drinking water for 4 weeks… Expand

Spirulina versicolor improves insulin sensitivity and attenuates hyperglycemia-mediated oxidative stress in fructose-fed rats
TLDR
S. versicolor attenuates hyperglycemia-mediated oxidative stress and inflammation, and is thus effective in improving insulin sensitivity in fructose-fed rats. Expand
Anti- hyperglycemic effect of aqueous extract of Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty ex. P. Silva in alloxan-induced diabetic rats
TLDR
Results demonstrate that K. alvarezii can be used as a health food and has strong anti-diabetic effects in vivo; thus, it may have beneficial properties in the prevention of diabetes and could be useful in the development of anti-Diabetic drugs. Expand
Investigation on bio-properties and in-vivo antioxidant potential of carrageenans against alloxan induced oxidative stress in Wistar albino rats.
TLDR
From the results, it was understood that native carrageenan was considered to be a protective antioxidant and anti-therapeutic agent with biological properties. Expand
Effects of Palmaria palmata on lipid metabolism and glycemic control in participants with hypercholesterolemia in a randomized double‐blind placebo‐controlled trial
TLDR
Red algae have been reported to improve lipid and glucose metabolism in rats and the effects of Palmaria palmata, a red alga from northern Japan, on lipid metabolism and glycemic control in participants with hypercholesterolemia are investigated. Expand

Garlic improves insulin sensitivity and associated metabolic syndromes in fructose fed rats
TLDR
This study demonstrates that raw garlic homogenate is effective in improving insulin sensitivity while attenuating metabolic syndrome and oxidative stress in fructose-fed rats. Expand
ANTIDIABETIC AND INSULIN SENSITIZING EFFECTS OF PADINA PAVONIA AND TURBENARIA ORNATA IN STREPTOZOTOCIN/NICOTINAMIDE DIABETIC RATS
TLDR
It is demonstrated that both Padinapavonia and Turbenariaornata exhibit antidiabetic effects in a rat model of type 2 diabetes by their insulinotropic and insulin sensitizing effects. Expand
EFFECTS OF TEUCRIUM POLIUM ON ORAL GLUCOSE TOLERANCE TEST, REGENERATION OF PANCREATIC ISLETS AND ACTIVITY OF HEPATIC GLUCOKINASE IN DIABETIC RATS
TLDR
Although aqueous extract of T. polium contains some hepatotoxic compounds, it also contains components that are beneficial in the treatment of streptozocin-induced diabetes. Expand
Hesperidin and naringin attenuate hyperglycemia-mediated oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokine production in high fat fed/streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetic rats.
TLDR
Preliminary experimental findings demonstrate that both hesperidin and naringin exhibit antidiabetic effects in a rat model of T2DM by potentiating the antioxidant defense system and suppressing proinflammatory cytokine production. Expand
Effect of fructose overfeeding and fish oil administration on hepatic de novo lipogenesis and insulin sensitivity in healthy men.
TLDR
In conclusion, high-fructose diet induced dyslipidemia and hepatic and adipose tissue insulin resistance and fish oil reversed dys Lipidemia but not insulin resistance. Expand
Antidiabetic effect of Dodonaea viscosa (L). Lacq. aerial parts in high fructose-fed insulin resistant rats: a mechanism based study.
TLDR
Fructose diet with DVW, DVE-4 significantly reduced blood glucose, serum insulin, HOMA, lipid profiles and significantly improved glucose tolerance and HDL-c levels and these extract and fraction also decreased oxidative stress by improving endogenous antioxidants. Expand
Sucrose induces fatty liver and pancreatic inflammation in male breeder rats independent of excess energy intake.
TLDR
Sucrose, at concentrations ingested by a subset of Americans, can accelerate metabolic syndrome, fatty liver, and type 2 diabetes mellitus in male breeder rats; and the effects are independent of excess energy intake. Expand
Improvement of Liquid Fructose-Induced Adipose Tissue Insulin Resistance by Ginger Treatment in Rats Is Associated with Suppression of Adipose Macrophage-Related Proinflammatory Cytokines
TLDR
It is found that treatment with the alcoholic extract of ginger for five weeks attenuated liquid fructose-induced hyperinsulinemia and an increase in the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index in rats and reversed the increases in the Adipo-IR index and plasma nonesterified fatty acid concentrations during the oral glucose tolerance test assessment. Expand
Metabolic effects of fructose and the worldwide increase in obesity.
TLDR
Although there is compelling evidence that very high fructose intake can have deleterious metabolic effects in humans as in rodents, the role of fructose in the development of the current epidemic of metabolic disorders remains controversial. Expand
Comparative effects of chromium, vanadium and gymnema sylvestre on sugar-induced blood pressure elevations in SHR.
TLDR
Chromium decreases the portion of SBP elevated by high sucrose intake as shown previously, but high levels of sucrose ingestion can eventually overcome this. Expand
