The yeast Candida tropicalis produces xylitol, a natural, low-calorie sweetener whose metabolism does not require insulin, by catalytic activity of NADPH-dependent xylose reductase. The oxidative pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) is a major basis for NADPH biosynthesis in C. tropicalis.
