Use-dependent modifications, such as long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic efficacy, are believed to be essential for information storage in the nervous system. Repetitive correlated spiking of presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons can induce LTP at excitatory glutamatergic synapses.
