Bufalin, a bufadienolide type cardiotonic steroid that is one of the major components of the toad venom-prepared traditional Chinese medicine called Ch'an Su or Senso, exhibits a cardiotonic action by inhibiting the membranous Na(+),K(+)-ATPase.
