Postoperative patient recovery continues to improve with the adoption of the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program established in 2005 in Northern European countries. The Japanese Society for Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition launched the ESSENSE project to introduce this program in Japan and to demonstrate its effectiveness. “ESSENSE” is an acronym for ESsential Strategy for Early Normalization after Surgery with patient’s Excellent satisfaction.
