BACKGROUND Although Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) is a highly effective treatment for clinically severe obesity, not all patients achieve desirable weight loss and maintenance. There is some evidence that weight loss can induce a disproportionate reduction in resting metabolic rate (RMR).
