In systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the risk of development of cardiovascular disease is dramatically increased. Inflammatory and immune-mediated mechanisms, favouring early alterations of the arterial wall are strongly involved in promoting the development of atherosclerosis (ATS) in young SLE patients.
