Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress arises when excessive improperly folded proteins accumulate in the ER lumen. When ER stress occurs, the unfolded protein response (UPR) is subsequently activated to restore ER proteostasis. However, severe ER stress leads to apoptosis.
