Neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus occurs throughout adult mammalian life and is essential for proper hippocampal function. Early in their development, adult-born neurons express homomeric alpha7-containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (alpha7-nAChRs) and receive direct cholinergic innervation.
