The rod-shaped Schizosaccharomyces pombe cell grows in a polarized fashion from opposing ends. Correct positioning of the growth zones is directed by the polarity marker Tea1 located at the cell ends where actin patches accumulate and cell growth takes place. We show that the S. pombe homologue of Saccharomyces cerevisiae SLA2, a protein involved in cortical actin organization and endocytosis, provides a link between the polarity marker and the growth machinery.
