An unusual encapsulated medullary carcinoma of the thyroid is reported. Immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy did not prove conclusively the cytogenesis of the tumor; however, in situ hybridization, by demonstrating the presence of calcitonin mRNA, revealed that the tumor is of C-cell derivation.
