Enactive Systems and Enactive Media: Embodied Human-Machine Coupling beyond Interfaces

title={Enactive Systems and Enactive Media: Embodied Human-Machine Coupling beyond Interfaces},
author={Mauri Kaipainen and Niklas Ravaja and Pia Tikka and Rasmus Vuori and Roberto Pugliese and Marco Rapino and Tapio Takala},
ABSTRACT This paper proposes the concept of enactive system as an alternative to the standard human-computer system and elaborates the idea of content mediation as enactive media. The authors' system consists of the two elements coupled in a holistic manner by means of bodily and spatial involvement, or enactment. Such a system is recursive by nature, involving the impact of the technology on the human agent as well as the effect of the human experience on the technology. Instead of the…
Enacting archetypes in movies: grounding the unconscious mind in emotion-driven media
A systematic approach for developing the content for emotion-driven media is demonstrated and it showed that it is promising to utilise archetypal movie clips as the content of emotion- driven media and Archetypal symbolism can be a useful resource for developingThe content of media systems.
Enacting Media. An Embodied Account of Enculturation Between Neuromediality and New Cognitive Media Theory
This paper argues that the still-emerging paradigm of situated cognition requires a more systematic perspective on media to capture the enculturation of the human mind and proposes an enactive account of media that is based on expansive habits as media-structured, embodied ways of bringing forth meaning and new domains of values.
Enactive media – generalising from enactive cinema
The concept of second- order spectatorship, analogous, to that of the second-order authorship will be described and suggests going beyond the conventional and implicitly dualist concept of human–computer interaction and proposes a more holistic participation within a media system.
An Enactive Perspective on Emotion: A Case Study on Monitoring Brainwaves
The possibilities of the sensor measurements of an EEG device to in fact potentially contribute to the design of an enactive system are investigated and their results are looked at through the lens of the enactive approach to cognition and its perspective of emotion and cognition as intertwined.
Enactive framework for design of Digital Music Interfaces
This paper presents a theoretical framework focused on how some principles of Enaction can contribute to the design of Digital Music Interfaces (DMIs). Enaction comprises cognition as an emergent
Screendance as enactment in Maya Deren’s At Land

The multimodal enactive interfaces are called for to ensure a delivery of realistic multi-modal experiences to the users and to aim this multisensory integration both from technology as well as cognitive science point of views need to be considered during the design process.
From naturalistic neuroscience to modeling radical embodiment with narrative enactive systems
It is suggested that narrative enactive systems with dynamically adaptive content as stimuli, may serve better to account for the embodied mind engaged with the surrounding world.
Enactive cinema paves way for understanding complex real-time social interaction in neuroimaging experiments
Theoretical and practical implications of what is promoted as enactive cinema for the neuroscientific study of online socio-emotional interaction, which constitutes a means to parametrically modify stimuli that depict social situations and their broader environmental contexts are outlined.
Communication, Machines & Human Augmentics
This essay reformulates the question of human augmentation as a problem of advanced humanmachine communication, theorizing that such communication implies robust artificial intelligence and

An enactive approach to social cognition
As yet, there is no enactive account of social cognition. This paper extends the enactive concept of sense-making into the social domain. It takes as its departure point the process of interaction

Narrative logic of enactive cinema: Obsession
This article concentrates on the explication of the narrative logic of this installation inspired by the Eisensteinian ‘montage machine’, and leaves aside a number of details of its complete setup.

Embodied Music Cognition and Mediation Technology
Digital media handles music as encoded physical energy, but humans consider music in terms of beliefs, intentions, interpretations, experiences, evaluations, and significations. In this book, drawing

Staying open to interpretation: engaging multiple meanings in design and evaluation
This paper lays out the contours of the new space opened by a focus on multiple interpretations, which may more fully address the complexity, dynamics and interplay of user, system, and designer interpretation.
