Up until the late 18th century, the imagination enjoyed an aesthetic specificity. This location within the realm of aesthesis implied the imagination had a specific mission in knowledge. However the Cartesian operation of separation of imagination and pure intellect —operation that is aesthetic, cognitive and, in the limit, politics— did not go unnoticed.
