Abstract From compilations of the empirical values of the complex mean field V ( r ; E ) + iW ( r ; E ) felt by protons and neutrons in 40 Ca and 208 Pb, it is concluded that the radial moments ∫ V ( r ; E ) r q d r and ∫ W ( r ; E ) r q d r are fairly well determined by the experimental data, the favoured values of the exponent being q ≈ 0.4–0.8 in the case of the real part V and q ≈ 1.2 ± 0.4 in the case of the imaginary part W .
