Empirical Analysis of an Evolving Social Network
@article{Kossinets2006EmpiricalAO, title={Empirical Analysis of an Evolving Social Network}, author={Gueorgi Kossinets and Duncan J. Watts}, journal={Science}, year={2006}, volume={311}, pages={88 - 90} }
Social networks evolve over time, driven by the shared activities and affiliations of their members, by similarity of individuals' attributes, and by the closure of short network cycles. We analyzed a dynamic social network comprising 43,553 students, faculty, and staff at a large university, in which interactions between individuals are inferred from time-stamped e-mail headers recorded over one academic year and are matched with affiliations and attributes. We found that network evolution is…

A behavior evolution-aware event-driven locality and attachedness based model to capture the growth dynamics in social networks and can better characterize the growing process and simulate important network structures observed in real networks than other non-event driven and non-behavior aware models.

An event-driven model to capture the growth dynamics of social networks through modelling of the social events and the evolution of event formation and the joint effect of attachedness and locality on the selection of participants for events in real social networks is proposed.
Evolution of an online social aggregation network: an empirical study
- EconomicsIMC '09

Analysis of an evolving online social aggregator FriendFeed finds that although preferential attachment captures the evolution of the network, its influence varies significantly based on how long ago a user joined the service, and suggests that proximity bias plays an important role in link formation.
Homophily and Triadic Closure in Evolving Social Networks

A micro-founded mathematical model of the evolution of a social network and of the social capital of individuals within the network is presented, showing that each form of capital plays a different role and is affected differently by the characteristics of the society.

The formation and evolution of networks are observed by monitoring the addition of all new links and the tendencies used to create ties are analyzed quantitatively, finding that women reciprocate connections three times as much as men and this difference increases with age.

- Computer ScienceKDD

This work forms a temporal notion of "distance" in the underlying social network by measuring the minimum time required for information to spread from one node to another - a concept that draws on the notion of vector-clocks from the study of distributed computing systems.
Evolution of Social Networks: A Microfounded Model
- EconomicsArXiv
- 2015
This paper presents a first model to capture the micro-foundations of social networks evolution, where boundedly rational agents of different types join the network; meet other agents stochastically over time; and consequently decide to form social ties.

A model of organizational networks according to which links are added incrementally to a hierarchical backbone is introduced and it is found that multiscale networks attain most of their robustness with surprisingly few link additions, suggesting that ultrarobust organizational networks can be generated in an efficient and scalable manner.
