11 INTRODUCT ION The magnetic hard disk drive (HDD) plays an important and extremely useful role in every information processing system; in fact this role is constantly growing as a result of advances in capacity, performance and price. Since the first HDD was introduced in 1956, this device has been the recipient of significant additional technology innovations which have extended its value.
